about

Stephanie Wytovich vs. Michael Arnzen
Horror Poetry Slam
at DV8 Espresso Bar & Gallery
Greensburg, PA
Recorded live: Nov. 2, 2012

Approx 40 minutes

Shortly after Halloween in 2012, two acclaimed horror poets from Raw Dog Screaming Press met at DV8 art gallery in a head-to-head poetry battle with unforgettably lively and hilarious results. The challenge? To come ready to slam with a new piece inspired by the works of author Edgar Allan Poe, in addition to reading excerpts from their books. Stephanie Wytovich shares excerpts that would later appear in her first book, Hysteria. Michael Arnzen reads samples from The Gorelets Omnibus and his flash fiction collection, 100 Jolts.

Luckily, this historical Poedown was recorded for infamy! The event launched a continuing tradition: whenever the two poets meet on the same stage, they dare each other to come ready to slam on a new icon of the horror genre, and subsequent slams have included poems about Nosferatu, Cronenberg films, clowns, and much more. These poems and new slams are currently being gathered into a collection forthcoming in 2016, tentatively titled DV8ions.

STEPHANIE WYTOVICH has so far published three Bram Stoker Award-nominated poetry books. Her last, Brothel, as just been released by Raw Dog Screaming Press. Her novel, The Eighth, is coming soon from Dark Regions Press. She has an MFA from Seton Hill University and has taught at Carlow University in Pittsburgh. MICHAEL A. ARNZEN has so far won four Bram Stoker Awards over his career, including one for his novel Grave Markings (recently reprinted in a 20th Anniversary edition). He has published eight poetry collections, and an experiment in audio horror called Audiovile, available now in an expanded digital edition on bandcamp. He teaches in the Writing Popular Fiction program at Seton Hill University. Discover more of Michael Arnzen's Gorelets:
